Dr. Cory Ramstead was born and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He was accepted into medical school at the University of Saskatchewan after completing 2 years of undergraduate studies. Upon receiving his medical degree with distinction, he completed his 5-year Ophthalmology residency at the University of Alberta. To further his surgical skills he went on to do a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Ramstead is board certified in Canada with the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and board certified in the United States as a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). He has participated in various research projects and his work has been published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Ramstead finished in the 99th percentile of the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP) exam across North America in his final year of residency training.
His work day does not end at five o’clock. Whether is it reading up about the latest surgical techniques or calling patients to follow up on their surgery, Dr. Ramstead goes out of his way to give his patients the best surgical experience possible. His detail and thoughtfulness toward his practice and patients always shines through. He is an active role model to medical students and residents as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. Since 2016 he has served as the Division Head of Ophthalmology for Geographies 1, 2, and 3 within Island Health.
Accomplishments and Awards
Dr. Ramstead has won numerous awards, including the Governor General’s Bronze Medal in 1998, the John Proskie Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology in 2007 and the Book Prize for the best Neuro-ophthalmology presentation at the 2003 Canadian Ophthalmological Society Meeting. He was also an All-Canadian All-Academic team member for two years in cross-country running while completing medical school.

Outside of work, Dr. Ramstead can often be found on one of the many trails in the Cowichan Valley. He is an avid runner and belongs to the local running club, the Ceevacs. In addition to running he enjoys wake foiling and spending time with his wife and three children.
