Ophthalmologist - Eye Physician and Surgeon

Our mission is to provide you with the best possible ophthalmic surgical care. We offer the latest technologies in refractive cataract surgery including the Light Adjustable Lens. We were the second clinic in Canada to start providing this amazing technology which allows us to fine tune your vision to achieve superior results to fixed lenses. We also offer many other options to reduce the need for glasses at both distance and near as well as the correction of astigmatism.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in disease and surgery of the eye. After completing four years of medical school, they undergo 5 to 7 years of specialized ophthalmology training, including a residency and possibly fellowship programs. This extensive training covers everything from general medical care to the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases using medical, surgical, and laser techniques. To practice in British Columbia, ophthalmologists must pass the Medical Council of Canada exams, complete a five-year residency in an accredited program, and succeed in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's exams.

Refractive Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery involves breaking up the cloudy lens into small pieces, which are then carefully removed through a small, self-sealing incision. The procedure is done under topical anaesthesia with eye drops and no needles. We offer basic cataract surgery with a basic lens which is covered fully by MSP. We also offer refractive cataract surgery options with premium lenses and technologies to improve the quality of vision and decrease the dependency on glasses to see clearly.

A cataract forms when the eye's normally clear lens becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or distorted vision. This cloudiness is due to a
chemical change within the eye. While cataracts cannot be prevented, early detection through regular eye exams can help preserve as much vision as possible.

You may be at higher risk for cataracts if you are over 55, have had eye injuries or diseases, have a family history of cataracts, smoke, or use certain medications. Cataracts are painless, but they can cause symptoms like blurred vision, sensitivity to light, a sensation of a film over the eyes, ghost images, and a temporary improvement in near vision.

  • Blurred/hazy vision
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • A feeling of “film” over the eye(s)
  • Ghost images or shadowing
  • A temporary improvement in near vision

For many, vision loss due to cataracts can be improved with prescription glasses or contact lenses. However, when cataracts significantly impact vision, surgery is often the best option. Dr. Ramstead specializes in refractive cataract surgery, performed without needles or stitches, using premium intraocular lenses (IOL) and technologies to replace the cloudy lens. This allows not only vision that is more clear but often reduced dependency on glasses to function.

Like any surgery there are always risks involved. Fortunately cataract surgery is one of the most successful surgeries in medicine. Dr. Ramstead will examine your eyes and determine the risks and benefits of surgery as they apply to your specific situation.
